Safe Boating:
The sun is shining and the water is warm; boating season has begun! Few things compare to the joy of hitting the open waters of Georgian Bay. Some people fish, some people water-ski, and others just cruise. Whatever aquatic activity floats your boat, just remember safety first.
Keep in mind these simple steps to make sure that your boating season is both fun and safe for everyone.
Have your credentials in order:
There are a few things you need to have covered before starting your engines. First is a PCOC (Pleasure Craft Operator Card). It doesn’t matter how big the engine, or how long the boat, you are required by law to carry this card if you are operating any powered watercraft in Canada. If your boat is powered by 10 horsepower or more, it should have a Pleasure Craft License, similar to a car’s plate. Finally, insurance coverage of some kind. Try to think or driving a boat just as you would a car. Many of the same rules and practices will apply. For more information on requirements you can visit Transport Canada @ www.tc.gc.ca
Check your equipment:
A boat in poor condition can leave you stranded in the water, or worse. Before you head out make a list and check it twice. Be sure to cover all structural, mechanical, and electrical areas and resolve any outstanding issues. Always make sure your plugs are in place before even entering the water.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure:
Safe boating is prepared boating. Have extra safety equipment on board that is in good working order. A kit should include things like extra fuel, drinking water, food, a first aid kit, signaling devices, extra clothes, and basic engine repair parts and tools.
Life preservers are named that for a reason:
Once you are out and about, don’t neglect your life jacket. A PFD (personal floatation device) can save your life. The majority of those who die in a boating accident were not wearing their PFD. It’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!
Finally don’t drink and drive!
Just like when driving a car, drinking will lower your reaction time and put you and everyone else at risk. Also, it is illegal. The consequences could be far worse than losing your license. Keep the booze on land where you’re less likely to spill it.
Keep it safe, and Happy Boating!
