Dollar Stores to the Rescue
Dollar stores have saved our hide more than once. Often we need a last minute simple tool or a few cleaning products to get the job quick and on a budget and the dollar stores have never let us down. There are a few things to avoid when perusing the endless isles, and I don’t just mean the junk food. But when it comes to basics, most of their products are very comparable to their competitors’. And in some cases they are the exact same product with a different label and at a fraction of the price!
Electronics:
Most of this stuff all comes from China. It doesn’t matter if you’re picking it up at a big box store, or a mom and pop shop, the majority of electronics are made overseas and shipped in. The dollar stores will offer many items like small extension cords and power bars for approximately half the price of its competitors. I have seen this exact 6ft cord at a certain store, a Depot if you will, that specializes in Homes for twice the price.
Hand Tools:
I’ll be honest, most of the hand tools found in the buck or two stores are not up to the quality control of the other tools on the market. Not only that, but there is no real warranty to speak of. For example, if you break a Mastercraft screwdriver, just bring it in and you’ll get a replacement, no receipt required. You won’t have the same luck when you’re buying from the budget stores. However, in some cases the quality speaks for itself (or doesn’t matter). Items like wire brushes and putty knives will not give you any problems. And in fact, again I have seen the same items at a certain Canadian retailer that might happen to sell Tires, for triple the price. You’ll have to pick your battles.
Paint Supplies:
Unless you’re finishing some high end work that requires deadly precision, this is a no brainer. The quality and selection of paint supplies offered at most dollar stores makes it my go to spot to get the job done. I have also noticed that their selection often offers some innovative products that you don’t see at other retailers. They will have unique trays, stir sticks, brush holders, and more to help you get your project completed properly, easily, and of course under budget!
